The birth of the internet and the rapid growth of social media have brought benefits to the community. An ordinary person without journalism knowledge who reports newsworthy situations on his or her neighbourhood or community is known as a citizen journalist (Noor. R., 2017).
With the definition, you can also be a citizen journalist too. According to Harper. A. (n.d.), citizen journalist can capture images and footages of news as it breaks and spreads the news faster than the mainstream media. That means the news in an online environment is user-generated. You can be the source of interesting news, and the news that you post may become viral than the credible and reliable news from the mainstream media.
Timeliness is the biggest challenge to the mainstream media in the online environment today (JournalismResearchNews, 2017). The mainstream media must be able to multitask and be creative in reporting the news to gain a higher readership and subscribers. You can have a live video streaming to record and show the online users what is going on and this becomes a trend for mainstream media especially print media publication to have live video streaming in the press conference.
No matter what methods and platforms you use to report and disseminate the news and how is the competition between you and the mainstream media in terms of timeliness, the most important thing that every journalist should do is ethical reporting to produce a high credibility and reliability news to the world.
